Films & Barrier

Barrier, strength and material structure

Barrier films and bio-films must reliably retain oxygen, water vapour and gases while remaining mechanically robust. We measure permeation, strength, sealing and material structure.

Typical tests in this area

  • Permeation of oxygen, water vapour, nitrogen and carbon dioxide
  • Mechanical properties: tensile strength, elongation, puncture and tear resistance, sealability
  • Material analysis: layer structure, polymer type, fillers and additives
  • Accelerated ageing in storage tests

Measuring barrier under real conditions

We measure permeation of oxygen and water vapour, and also of nitrogen and carbon dioxide, through films, laminates, coated papers and fabrics. We also test complete packaging such as containers, bottles and pouches.

Measurement is carried out under the climatic conditions that apply to your application. A barrier can only be measured if the package is tight, so we also offer leak testing.

Strength, sealing and structure

Mechanical film properties such as tensile strength, elongation, puncture and tear resistance determine how the film withstands processing and use. Sealability, slip and anti-block behaviour are also important technological properties.

Material analysis shows the number of layers, the layer thickness distribution and the polymer type, for example by FTIR spectroscopy.

Frequently asked questions

Which gases are measured in permeation testing?

Oxygen and water vapour are the most common. We also measure nitrogen and carbon dioxide. Permanent gases such as air, helium or argon are available on request.

Under which conditions should measurement be carried out?

Measurement should take place under the climatic conditions that apply in real use. We agree the conditions with your application.

Can complete packaging be tested?

Yes. We measure containers, bottles and pouches. A barrier measurement requires the package to be tight, so we also offer leak testing for this purpose.

  • Understanding the fat barrier of fibre-based packaging – why testing is crucial

Fatty foods pose particular challenges for packaging. Fats can penetrate materials, affect their appearance or cause problems from the very first contact. This is precisely why tests such as fat resistance, fat permeability and fat repellency play a central role – both in development and in quality assurance.  In this context, two fundamental perspectives can be distinguished: …
