Printing, Inks & Adhesives

Digital, gravure and flexographic printing

Printing inks and adhesives are often the source of migration and odour. We test primary aromatic amines, residual solvents and the set-off behaviour of the print, regardless of the printing process.

Typical tests in this area

  • Primary aromatic amines (PAA), by LC-MS/MS or as a photometric sum method
  • Residual solvents
  • Set-off of printing inks and varnishes
  • Overall and specific migration
  • Optics of the film: haze, gloss, opacity

Migration from printing and lamination

We determine primary aromatic amines as individual analyses by LC-MS/MS or by the photometric sum method according to § 64 LFGB (method L 00.006). We also test residual solvents.

The set-off test checks whether ink or varnish transfers to the reverse side of the material when stacked or wound. The test follows Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006.

Optics and adhesion

We measure haze, gloss and opacity on films. Adhesion and abrasion of the print are tested depending on the order.

Frequently asked questions

What are primary aromatic amines (PAA) and why are they tested?

PAA can migrate from printing inks and adhesives into food packaging. We test them as individual analyses by LC-MS/MS or as a photometric sum.

What does set-off mean?

Set-off describes the transfer of printing ink or varnish onto the reverse side of the material lying on top, for example when stacked or rolled. Testing follows Regulation (EC) No 2023/2006.

Which methods are used for print testing?

We test digital, gravure and flexographic printing. The method depends on the printing process and the question, for example migration, set-off or optics.

If you use a new printing ink or adhesive, testing before series production is worthwhile. Write to us with your requirement.

Regulation (EU) 2024/3190, which was adopted in December 2024, banned the use of bisphenol A (BPA) and its salts in food contact materials. But what exactly does that mean? On 17 December 2025, the EU published Guideline C/2025/6721. This guideline answers practical questions on five main areas. 1. Scope of application of the Regulation 2.…
