How the calculation works

According to the Arrhenius relationship, aging processes speed up as temperature rises. With Q10 = 2, the reaction rate is assumed to double for every 10 °C increase in temperature.

AAF = Q10(TAA − TRT) / 10

Acceleration factor from Q10 and the temperature difference

Test duration = duration to be simulated / AAF  ·  TAA = test temperature, TRT = real storage temperature

Worked examples

Example 1

365 days at 23 °C

≙ 39.7 days at 55 °C (AAF 9.19)

Example 2

365 days at 23 °C

≙ 79.4 days at 45 °C (AAF 4.59)

Example 3

730 days at 25 °C

≙ 129 days at 50 °C (AAF 5.66)

Putting accelerated storage tests into perspective

We recommend verifying key results from accelerated storage tests with storage tests under real conditions. The elevated temperature can lead to aging effects being overestimated; because of the shortened test duration, underestimates are also possible. Nevertheless, accelerated storage tests are indispensable for estimating time-dependent aging effects and as a basis for risk management decisions.

Storage tests in the laboratory

Accelerated aging at Innoform

We carry out storage tests and accelerated aging in heating or cooling cabinets with controlled temperature, in climate chambers with controlled temperature and relative humidity, and in explosion-proof heating chambers – and then test your materials for the properties that matter to you.
