Overall migration testing – simply commissioned.

Compliant with Regulation (EU) No. 10/2011

We test your packaging against the legal requirements for food contact.

Plain language, no jargon

You answer questions about the food and the packaging – we translate that into test parameters.

Fixed-price quote

You receive a clear, written quote with price, duration and scope – before we start.

Personal guidance

A dedicated contact explains the results in a way you can pass on internally.

What is overall migration testing – in plain terms

When packaging comes into contact with food, only very small quantities of substances may transfer into the food. This transfer is called migration. The overall migration test measures the total amount – regardless of which individual substances are involved. The legal limit is 10 mg / dm² of packaging surface.

When do I need it?

  • You are launching a new packaging on the market
  • Your customer asks for a declaration of compliance
  • An authority requests evidence
  • You change supplier, material or print

What you don’t need to know

  • Which simulant is the right one
  • Which test times and temperatures apply
  • What SML, NIAS or OML actually mean
  • What test reports formally need to look like

What our expert reports look like

What we cover in one go

In the request form you tick what you are interested in. You can choose individual modules or the complete package – we will recommend the sensible combination.

OM

Overall migration

The mandatory test. Measures how much total substance migrates from the packaging into the food. Limit: 10 mg/dm².

SML

Specific migration

Individual critical substances (e.g. plasticisers, monomers) are quantified separately – each with its own limit value.

NIAS

NIAS screening

Non-intentionally added substances – such as breakdown products or impurities – we look for unknown substances and classify them.

Sensory

Sensory testing

Transfer of odour and taste to the food – assessed by a trained panel according to DIN 10955.

Your food and its packaging

These details determine the simulants and conditions we test with.

What first-time clients usually ask

How much sample material do you need?

For an overall migration test we need about 6 dm² of film or several identical packagings. We will tell you the exact quantity together with the quote.

How long does the test take?

A pure overall migration test usually takes 2–3 weeks from sample arrival. Combinations with SML or NIAS extend the timeline to 3–5 weeks. We confirm the duration in the quote.

What does it cost approximately?

A single overall migration test typically starts in the low four-figure range. The cost depends on the number of simulants, the sample format and any additional modules. You always receive a binding fixed-price quote up front – no surprises.

Do I need OM, SML, NIAS – or all of them?

Which modules make sense depends on the material, the food and your compliance situation. If you are unsure, just describe the application as well as you can – we will recommend the appropriate scope in the quote.

What happens if the sample fails?

We will go through possible causes and remedies with you. Often a change to the structure, a different supplier or an adjusted test approach helps. You won’t be left alone with the result.

Prefer to talk?

We take time for your first test.

You can also skip the form and call or email us directly. We will go through the questions with you on the phone – free of charge and without obligation.
