Labels, Paper & Sleeves

Adhesion, paper properties and migration

Labels and sleeves must adhere, be processable and stay on the product, including under humidity and cold. We test adhesion, paper properties, sealing and migration from printed papers.

Typical tests in this area

  • Adhesion according to FINAT and tape test (Tesa test, ASTM F 2252)
  • Paper properties: breaking force, elongation at break, TEA according to DIN EN ISO 1924-2
  • Water absorption of paper according to Cobb (DIN EN ISO 535)
  • Residual solvents and migration
  • Accelerated ageing in storage tests

Adhesion and processing

We test adhesion using the FINAT method. In addition, we carry out the tape test, for example according to Tesa or ASTM F 2252.

We test papers for breaking force, elongation at break and TEA according to DIN EN ISO 1924-2. Water absorption is measured using the Cobb test (DIN EN ISO 535).

Migration and ageing

We test residual solvents and migration for labels on food packaging. A storage test at elevated temperature shows how adhesion and material behave over time.

Frequently asked questions

How is label adhesion tested?

We test adhesion using the FINAT method. We also carry out the tape test, for example according to Tesa or ASTM F 2252.

Which paper properties are important?

Breaking force, elongation at break and TEA according to DIN EN ISO 1924-2, and water absorption using the Cobb test (DIN EN ISO 535). They show how the paper can be processed and how it reacts to moisture.

Does a label on food packaging need a migration test?

That depends on material, adhesive, print and food. We will clarify in advance which tests make sense.

  • Understanding the fat barrier of fibre-based packaging – why testing is crucial

Fatty foods pose particular challenges for packaging. Fats can penetrate materials, affect their appearance or cause problems from the very first contact. This is precisely why tests such as fat resistance, fat permeability and fat repellency play a central role – both in development and in quality assurance.  In this context, two fundamental perspectives can be distinguished: …
