Colorimetric measurement, colourimetry (L*, a*, b*)

Measurement of colors, e.g. for evaluation of color deviations, color changes, for comparative measurements, etc. on films, granulates or flakes, articles, pastes, liquids, or others. Possible parameters: Measuring area 3- 25.4 mm, light type D 65 or D 50, measuring geometry d8, observer 2° or 10°- depending on the task and the test standard to be fulfilled.

Test Method Group: optical tests

Norms:
  • APR PET-S-02 (colorimetry only) (2018-11) PET Flake or Pellet Discoloration
  • DIN 5033-1 (2017-10) Colorimetry – Part 1: Basic terms of colorimetry
  • DIN Fachbericht 49 (1995) Verfahren zur Vereinbarung von Farbtoleranzen
  • DIN EN ISO 105-A05 (1997-07) Textiles — Tests for colour fastness — Part A05: Instrumental assessment of change In colour for determinatlon of grey scale rating
  • DIN EN ISO 18314-1 (Dezember 2018) Analytical colorimetry – Part 1: Practical colour measurement
  • EPBP QT 507 (colorimetry only) (2017-03) Quick Test Bleeding label
  • DIN 53236 (2018-02) Colouring materials – Conditions of measurement and evaluation for the determination of colour differences for paint coatings, similar coatings and plastics
  • DIN 5020 (September 2022) DIN/TR 5020 Introduction to colorimetric principles for quality management

Required Sample Amount: liquids, pastes, granulates, flakes: min 100 ml, sheet materials: min 5 x DIN A 4

Standard Tests

Colour measurement on liquids, pastes, etc.

Specific Norm: DIN 5033-1

The method is used, for example, to evaluate the color perception of liquids, pastes and similar materials. One application is, for example, the evaluation of the discoloration of washing solutions from cleaning processes for PET recyclates (bleeding). Here, color measurements are used to document the effects of packaging design on PET recyclate, e.g. with regard to possible bleeding of printing inks from label materials into PET.

Colour measurement on films, printings, etc.

Specific Norm: DIN 5033-1

The method is used, for example, to evaluate the matching of colours or colour changes. Here, the deviation from a defined standard, which is called Δ E or ΔL*,Δ a*,Δ b* for the three individual colour axes, is usually of interest.
